Open the System Builder →A backtest that only reports profit is flattering itself. These are the four figures that decide whether you could really have sat through a system - and the builder shows all of them.
Profit in points - +25.0 means the system returned 25 points more than it risked. ROI is that profit as a percentage of the money actually at risk, never the bet count, which stops meaning anything once stakes vary or you are laying.
Actual wins divided by the wins the market implied. Above 1.00 means the qualifiers won more often than their prices suggested - the clearest sign a rule is finding something real rather than just backing short prices.
The worst stretch the system put you through. A profitable system with a 40-bet losing run and a 30 point drawdown is one most people abandon before it comes good.
We only hold exchange prices for horses that later appeared on one of our racecards, so Betfair settlement runs on a subset of the qualifiers. The builder tells you the coverage; when it is low, trust the industry SP figures instead.
A backtest tells you what a set of rules did, not what it will do. Small samples flatter; a good A/E over forty bets can be noise. Paper-test any system on future racing before you put money behind it, and treat a long losing run in the backtest as a promise that one is coming.
