Had excellent campaigns in 2024 and 2025, both of which ended with Group 1 success in good style against her own sex on Champions Day at Ascot; she also started last season with a big run in an Irish Group 1 and was an excellent second in the King George at Ascot in July; wore cheekpieces last two starts; concedes 4lb to male rivals today but probably still the one to beat.
Comment
Ended 2025 on another high note; gives 4lb to male rivals; probably still the one to beat
Quotes
"It's massive and it's one of the biggest days in British racing. To be here with a filly like Kalpana is amazing. She's tough. It didn't work out for her in the Arc, but the owners are sportsmen and they said to roll the dice if Andrew [Balding, trainer] was happy. He gave us the green light on Wednesday and thank god he did - Barry Mahon, owners' racing manager. It was very important for Kalpana because she's been knocking on the door all year. Things didn't go right for her in the Arc, but Andrew and the team thought she was well so they rolled the dice. Bar the last day, she's gone down on her sword every time this year - Colin Keane, jockey."
2025-10-18 - Ascot"We're disappointed not to win but the horse who beat us is very good. Kalpana is having a proper blow now, so hopefully that will put her spot on for what we're doing. We didn't want it to be a falsely run race and it wasn't, it was a nice even pace. She had every chance, a good horse has beaten her and she'll come on for the run. We need to discuss plans. She's in the Arc and the Fillies & Mares and it's up to where the powers at be want to go. This was a prep and the Arc was always the plan, but we'll just have to see how the fields develop. She'd had a couple of easy weeks after the King George. She's a big filly now and she'll come on for that - Andrew Balding, trainer."
2025-09-06 - Kempton (AW)"I'm very proud of Kalpana and she's run her heart out again. She did nothing wrong, she had every chance but was just beaten by a quick one on the day. I'd have thought the step up in trip helped. It was a career-best effort and we'll be working back from Paris in October. She's a class act and she's tightened up since her two runs this season. She's come on again and we're excited by the autumn. She hasn't won a race this year so she has no penalty, so going to the September Stakes could be an option. It's on our doorstep and you're guaranteed the surface. She won it last year and it's possible, but if the Prix Vermeille looked a good shot then it's a Group 1 at the end of the day. There's an extra week from that and the Arc this year so anything is possible - Andrew Balding, trainer. It was a huge run and we're over the moon with Kalpana. She's a very good filly and although ground doesn't affect her, she's probably a little bit better on softer ground. It gives us a bit of encouragement that we could still have a big autumn with her. In the last number of years it's been on the soft side [at Longchamp], but we know she has the option of coming back here on Champions Day too. Today was her big target in the first part of the season and we'll see how she comes out of it, but hopefully there's a chance she can turn up in the Arc. She's danced every dance. She's been to Ireland and taken on Aidan O'Brien's filly [Whirl], who is very talented, and she ran her heart out in the Tatts Gold Cup. It looked like we had it at the furlong pole, but the winner is very good and he kicked into gear in the last half-furlong, and it's probably where that faster ground has caught her out a bit, but she's a great filly and she didn't lie down- Barry Mahon, owners' racing manager."
2025-07-26 - Ascot"Kalpana is a wonderful filly and William Buick gave her a wonderful ride. This filly hadn't even done any fast work this time last year, so it's been a pretty steep trajectory from Wolverhampton to here. I've never known a horse improve as much. I even recall mentioning to Barry Mahon [Juddmonte racing manager] that we might put her in a sale this time last year but every time we started to do more with her, she's just improved and improved. She didn't love the ground today but she coped with it. She's such a diamond and has a very special temperament - Andrew Balding, trainer."
2024-10-19 - Ascot"I still think Kalpana is a bit green and a bit raw. I think she's going to continue to improve with time and age. I'd be very excited about her and the sky's the limit - P J McDonald, jockey."
2024-09-07 - Kempton (AW)"I didn't really know which way the race was going to pan out. I thought there might be a few of the lads battling for the lead and we had a plan to sit in and pick the pieces up but Kalpana jumped great and I got a lovely pitch the whole way round. Once I got into the dip and I sat into her in the rising ground she stretched and galloped to the line - P J McDonald, jockey, speaking to Racing TV."

Can front-run; dual Group 3 winner (2022 and 2023) who missed 2024 and most of 2025; regular action since November, including a Listed win and matching career-best form when second to mighty Calandagan at Meydan (1m4f Group 1, good); not so hot on softer ground at Longchamp (evens) 13 days ago but will give them all plenty to think about if straight back to his best.

"He got loose behind the stalls before his intended run at Newbury but is fine after that and will go in a novice this week. We've always liked him and he did well over the winter, so I'd like to think that he'll be worth following when he steps up from 1m2f. 25-04-22"
Quotes
"West Wind Blows had to enter the barriers a couple of times and I'm not sure that helped. He was slow away and overall was disappointing - Jamie Spencer, rider."
2023-11-11 - Flemington"It was a fascinating visual seeing him [West Wind Blows] and Without A Fight battling it out at the finish. All credit to both horses because they're seriously good and it was a great spectacle. We took Without A Fight over for the Melbourne Cup last year. The ground was too soft then, but he went down there to stay there and that was the whole point of last year's trip. They're two tough horses ? it was fantastic to watch. It was a great run and West Wind Blows came close to winning. He was so close yet so far, but I'm very proud of him as he had to fight hard and it was a super effort - Simon Crisford, joint-trainer."
2023-10-21 - Caulfield"We could be (tempted by the Arc), it's the championship race of the year, but we'll sit down with the owner and make a plan for West Wind Blows - Ed Crisford, joint-trainer."

Progressed very well as 3yo last term, culminating in his close third in Group 2 Great Voltigeur at York (1m4f, good to firm) in August, until not so good trying 1m6f in Listed race on final outing; always close up and rallied when close second in 1m4f Listed event at Longchamp on reappearance; may well have more to give but it is needed in today's company.

Quotes
"At Kempton Arabian Force was very raw and green but he's learned plenty from then. He was a touch slow and I wanted to be on the front end so I've had to ride him quite aggressively early on which probably wasn't ideal but he needed that today to wake him up a little bit. I got a nice breather in him round the bend and had something to aim in the straight and I committed him early as he's going to stay further. He's very tough, we had a challenger on our outside but he knuckled down and, with a bit of ease in the ground and stepping up in trip, you'll see a much better horse. He's only going to progress throughout the year - Cieren Fallon, jockey, speaking to Racing TV."

Won two 1m6f handicaps last term, latterly in taking style from off the pace at Royal Ascot (good to firm) when wearing headgear first time; gelded and back to that sort of form when third of six in Group 2 at Newmarket (1m4f) 15 days ago, albeit not getting to grips with the leaders; no headgear that day (he has also tried a visor) but he's now fitted with first-time cheekpieces; bit to find if others are on their game.
Comment
Tries a third type of headgear, after a creditable reappearance without; bit to find
Quotes
"French Master a bit more than that [a promising handicapper] I think. Phillipa Cooper [previous owner] had Gregory before that who won the Vase here, a good Cup horse, and I think this horse might go that way - John Gosden, joint-trainer, speaking to ITV."

Usually races prominently; a mostly solid 2025 included 1m2f Listed wins in May and November; 2026 started in downbeat fashion (similar to last year) in Listed race and his top three ratings have been registered on softer than good; this is also a new trip (unraced beyond an extended 1m2f) but he's bred to get it and has a chance on best form; ground the chief worry.
Comment
Bred to get this new trip but top three ratings have been registered on softer than good

"He's come out of his win at Goodwood really well and will probably run in the Wolferton if there's a little bit of juice in the ground. 12-06-25"
"A beautiful colt and, after winning his only start last year at Nottingham by five lengths, we put him away for the winter. On his return at Newmarket earlier this month I thought he would take some beating, but it could be that trying to concede 7lb to Waipiro will look to have been some task as I thought the winner looked smart on the day. I had wanted to run him at Newbury later that week as I felt the course would suit him more but I saw Sheikh Obaid had two other entries so I opted for Newmarket, although I know the Sheikh would not have minded where I ran him. We will look for a Derby trial if we can get some ground on the easy side. 07-05-23"
Quotes
"I didn't do a whole lot really. Liberty Lane jumped, got himself into a lovely rhythm and hit the line really well. He's a really honest and genuine horse. They didn't go that quickly and I wanted him rolling before the Dip, and he met the rising ground and really relished going up the hill. He loves it here and he loves the ground, so he's very straightforward - jockey Shane Gray, speaking on Racing TV."
2025-11-01 - Newmarket"Liberty Lane won the Cambridgeshire off top weight, but this was probably the best performance of his career so far. He's improving and I think he'll stay further than this too. I knew cantering to the start that he'd enjoy this. He travels so well and is a lovely, big horse. We can look forward to the rest of the season now and he can be a keen horse, but at the three-pole I thought I had everything put to bed - Clifford Lee, jockey, speaking to Racing TV."
2025-05-23 - Goodwood"I was a bit worried at halfway as they looked like they had it on the stands' side, but I had walked the course yesterday and I was convinced that's not where you wanted to be. The ground was 100 per cent the reason Liberty Lane didn't perform in the race last year, as he wants a bit of juice in the ground to be able to get into a rhythm. I ran him in the Dante as a three-year-old and he was always running a bit free as a younger horse but he's always been a good horse - Karl Burke, trainer."
2024-09-28 - Newmarket"Liberty Lane was sick after the Lincoln and scoped very dirty. The only reasons I ran him today were because I knew Sheikh Obaid would be here and it was a hundred grand race that we had entered early in. He had been coming back to himself in recent days but I didn't expect that. He's learning to relax in his races now as he was always very keen. Clifford gave him a lovely ride today and he will improve for that - Karl Burke, trainer."
2024-05-04 - Newmarket"All Liberty Lane does is gallop. I always thought soft ground and a mile is what he wants - Clifford Lee, jockey."
2023-09-16 - Doncaster"That felt very good, Liberty Lane travelled well throughout and relished the ease in the ground. He's a lovely horse, tries hard and had been working really well at home. He's a big colt but he's so chilled out and relaxes really nicely. Lucy (Burke) has been riding him a lot at home and I'd galloped him a few times; he's progressed really nicely - Clifford Lee, jockey."
