Merely mid-division in the Group 1 QEII at Ascot (1m, good) last October and again below his best on reappearance at Sandown (1m, good) in April; however, he pulled hard last time and holds leading claims if rediscovering the form of his Group 1 City Of York win (7f, good to firm) last August; mixed messages in his form regarding the suitability of slow ground.
Quotes
"Never So Brave has kept on improving. To win over seven furlongs then to win over a mile then drop back to seven again shows he's pretty versatile. He's probably got an exciting campaign ahead. He did it pretty well today but Oisin said that he felt that a mile is probably going to be the better spot for him - Anna Lisa Balding."
2025-08-23 - York"I was confident enough because if Never So Brave was relaxed he was good enough to be winning. He's very good and I'm thrilled with his progression. We put him in the Lennox but he's versatile in terms of trip from six furlongs to a mile. I don't know where he goes, this opens up a few options as he showed he gets a mile - Andrew Balding, trainer.I reverted to plan B. I didn't know what the pace would turn out to be but it turned out to be quite strong and Jamie [Spencer, on Point Lynas] slipped us and was ten lengths ahead turning into the straight. Luckily I had a real reliable companion underneath me and Never So Brave filled me with confidence. He quickened so well and even a furlong and a half out I felt I'd go away and win. He's quite talented but it's difficult for a horse to come out of a handicap and into a Group race like he's done but he's improved leaps and bounds through the winter and since Andrew [Balding, trainer] has got him. He's an exciting horse. To ride such a good winner like this is a privilege - David Probert, jockey."
2025-07-12 - Ascot"Never So Brave was gelded over the winter which may have helped him, but I know Sir Michael [Stoute] always had a high opinion of him - he ran him in the Jersey Stakes last year - and he was probably a Group horse in a handicap today. He settled well today, and I think the key to him is to try to get him to relax at an early stage of the race. He's got an excellent turn of foot if he can do that. He has been easy to train - the guys at home have done a brilliant job with him because he's not a very patient horse, he wants to get up the gallops first and get his exercise done, and they've done a lovely job with him. I'm really thrilled - Andrew Balding, trainer.Never So Brave was very good. His work has been excellent. I was worried he might get stuck in traffic from that draw, but he didn't, and I deliberately started a bit further back to allow the race to happen in front of him. If anything he got there very easily. He's a four-year-old now and I'd hope he will step up to Pattern company - Oisin Murphy, jockey."
2025-06-19 - Ascot"Never So Brave showed some nice form last year and he's come out this year and practically won as he liked at Thirsk. He's just kept progressing and this was a step up to find out whether we're still going in the right direction and he's done everything he was asked to do. It's difficult to say how high he'll go but he did that quite nicely and if he got the mile, you'd like to think he'd be a Britannia horse - Philip Robinson, racing manager to Saeed Suhail, owner."

Front-runner who won three Group 3s in France for Andre Fabre (1m, testing ground) and was a very close fourth in the Group 1 Prix du Moulin at Longchamp (1m, good to soft) last September; below-par fourth on stable debut at Leopardstown (1m, good; Listed) four weeks ago but may have needed the run; of interest if rediscovering his best French form.
Stable Tour
"We've just got him this year. He's quite interesting and looks like a miler. We're thinking of starting him off in the [Listed] Amethyst Stakes next month. He probably likes going around a turn and prefers it left-handed. He's talented when he puts it together. 22-04-26"

Inconsistent and he disappointed in Listed race at Haydock (7f, good) last time; however, he reportedly lost a shoe and prior to that was an encouraging fourth on his reappearance at the Curragh (7f, soft to heavy); won this race last year (good; at its old home Haydock) and posted fine third in Group 1 Foret at Longchamp (7f, very soft) last October; player if bouncing back.
Stable Tour
"I was a little disappointed with him in the Gladness Stakes but conditions were really testing and it was very hard to make up ground. It was also no coincidence that the winner was the only one who'd had a run this year or that he was ridden more positively than us. He's in great nick and might step up to a mile to see how he gets on. We may look at the bet365 Mile. 22-04-26"
Quotes
"Ten Bob Tony has always gone well fresh. He's very tough and gelding him has probably made him a bit more of a man. He's grown up a lot over the winter and he's getting towards being the finished article - Matty Hicks, assistant trrainer."

Listed winner on soft ground who won the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at Goodwood (7f, good) last July before excellent second in the Group 2 Hungerford at Newbury (7f, good to firm) in August; he's lost his form on his last four starts but perhaps wind surgery will have done the trick; wears a first-time tongue-tie and capable of having a big say if rediscovering his best.
Stable Tour
"The son of Expert Eye looks the part. He has done all we had been asking of him at home and we gave him his first run at Chester last Friday, where I thought it would take a nice one to beat him, and he proved me right with a very professional performance in winning on his debut. Danny brought him off the rail as they entered the short straight and in a matter of strides the race was over. I could not be happier with him, and we will wait and see how he recovers from his first day at the races before making any decisions. We are in no rush as I think he has a lovely future. 06-07-23"
Quotes
"I wouldn't have run Witness Stand if we didn't think we had a good chance. He was in good form and the Chester run really gave us the confidence we could go here. He ran a really nice race there and they broke the track record that day. The times were good and I thought when I saw there was a bit of cut in the ground today it gave me even more confidence. He goes on any ground but the slower the ground, the more to his advantage. I put him in the Prix de la Foret this morning with a bit of hope but it looks like a good call now. He's in the Hungerford, which he'd have to carry a penalty for, so we'll see. It's unbelievable to win a race like that. We've had an amazing season and hopefully we can keep getting these big winners. - Jamie Insole, joint-trainer."
2025-07-29 - Goodwood"Witness Stand's last two runs had been career bests and this was another big step up. He's not overly big but he has a big heart and is versatile regarding conditions - Kieran Shoemark, jockey."

Group 2 winner at the Curragh (7f, good) in July 2024 and runner-up in two 7f Group races last autumn (very soft/good); not at his best on his two runs this season but each-way claims if back on song today.
Stable Tour
"He got very tired in the slow ground on his return in the Gladness Stakes. He wants a bit of cut but he doesn't want it deep and holding like it was at the Curragh and you can put a line through that. He looks stronger than last year and will go for the Listed Spring Trophy at Haydock on May 10. Then, all being well, he'll go back there for the Group 3 John of Gaunt Stakes on May 31. 11-04-25"
Quotes
"Poet Master is still immature and can be difficult to switch off, but they went a good gallop in front and it suited perfectly. I could get him switched off. I got to the front sooner than I wanted. but he was able to gallop to the line. The ground was perfect for him. I think there is more to come, he is maturing all the time and I think he will keep improving - Sam James, jockey."
2024-07-21 - Curragh"Poet Master has got a lot of potential and feels if he'll get a mile no problem. I think there's a Listed race at Haydock he could go for next - Sam James, rider."
2024-04-18 - Newmarket"Poet Master has got his own ideas about the job, he's still learning, he's still green and he probably wasn't in love with that ground. He'll probably be a very decent horse when he puts everything together. It will have to be black type now but the better the race, the better he'll be. They went a good gallop there and he was always in his comfort zone - Sam James, jockey."

Short-headed in a Group 2 at Meydan (7f, good) in January but he needs a bigger performance if he's to take this and he hasn't been at the top of his game on his three starts since, most recently at the Curragh.
Quotes
"Chicago Critic has been up and down in trip, from six furlongs to a mile. I think a mile on fast ground is his ideal trip. They didn't go quick and I had a nice turn of foot towards the end so it's nice to get his head in front again. His best form is over a mile and he feels good at that trip - Ben Coen, jockey."
2025-05-11 - Leopardstown"We're absolutely delighted - that was fantastic. We came over because we thought we had a nice horse on our hands, but when you look at the strength of the race, it was a very, very good race and Chicago Critic ran his heart out. Ben gave him a great ride. We got excited up there for a couple of seconds - we thought he was coming, but he just couldn't get there. No fault of the horse, he ran brilliantly. Today was the plan, and now we know we have a horse of this level, we will think about what's next. He'll stay at seven or a mile - I think he'll get a mile no problem - Johnny Murtagh, trainer."
2024-06-22 - Ascot"Chicago Critic has been gelded since his last run so maybe that and the good ground both helped. I'm delighted with that and he could be a horse to go to Ascot for the Britannia Handicap - Johnny Murtagh, trainer"
2024-05-19 - Naas"Ben (Coen, jockey) said Chicago Critic is very professional, very genuine and should get a mile and a quarter next year - Johnny Murtagh, trainer."

5yo who won three handicaps last year (including on heavy ground) and has been better than ever in such races this season, finishing second at Musselburgh (7f, good to soft) then fourth of 28 in the Victoria Cup at Ascot (7f, good); however, he has something to find against today's opponents.
Quotes
"That was a surprise, it felt like the handicapper had Golden Mind. He was drawn on the far side and I was adamant he should stay there. He's a good old horse and that's three he's won this year - Richard Fahey, trainer."
2025-11-08 - Doncaster"There didn't seem to be much pace so when Golden Mind broke well I was able to get across and went fairly steady, getting the race my own way to be honest, and he's quickened up and done it well in the end. He gets 7f and I could see him going up in trip again - Oisin Orr, jockey, talking to Racing TV."

Listed runner-up at Sandown (1m, soft) last September and third in the same grade at Haydock (7f, good) four weeks ago on reappearance; however, he was comfortably beaten in that latest start and is 0-11 since winning novice contests at Doncaster in spring 2024 on second and third starts; up against it.
Comment
Returns from a layoff and may find that conditions place the emphasis too much on speed
Stable Tour
"He won twice and was second twice for us last season. He was third behind Urban Lion at Sandown on his first turf run of the season but he's desperate for it to rain. He's a 10lb better horse when there's juice in the ground - both his wins last year were on soft. So with the weather as it is you probably won't be seeing him for a while, unless I find a race for him in France or Ireland. 02-07-25"
Quotes
"We came here today to find out whether we've got a handicapper or a Group horse. That's for the trainer to decide now. But I imagine she's going to look for something flashier - Balmacara could do a bit of damage on soft ground in a Group race. He's done extremely well from his first run to this, he's come in his coat and he's strengthened up. He did it well last time but he was keen and got tired, today he had a stronger bit in his mouth and raced properly. He loves the ground, I don't think he's dependent on it but when he does get it it will be more of a disadvantage to the others than it will be to him - Charles Bishop, jockey."
