Superstar gelding who has a record of 222211111 since racing at Group 1 level and is the highest-rated racehorse in the world; couldn't quite get past Jan Brueghel in this race last year but turned the tables in the King George and is on an impressive roll going into another rematch with that rival; prevailed at Meydan (Sheema Classic) last time despite the race not panning out ideally; duly strongly respected, assuming the ground is okay (not certain to run if it's a slog scenario).
Comment
Second in this race last year; has since become the world's highest-rated racehorse
Stable Tour
"His form has worked out quite well but it will obviously be a different proposition at Ascot. He's a proper horse who has done everything very easily this year, while he's indifferent to the ground. He's very easy actioned and covers a lot of ground so I don't think the mile and a half will be a problem. 13-06-24 "
Quotes
"Calandagan is a fantastic champion and I'm so lucky to train a horse of this calibre. This race was tactical and I was a little bit worried but when he found his stride in the straight he was just unbelievable to watch. This is his fifth Group 1 in a row and he has a big reputation so I felt a lot of pressure today. We're ready to kick on again this season - Francis Graffard, trainer. Calandagan is an incredible horse, he's got his own attitude and I know him very well now - Mickael Barzalona, jockey."
2026-03-28 - Meydan"I knew I was bringing the best horse in the world, but was exposing Calandagan in a race that's almost impossible to win. I said to myself it wasn't really fair on the horse to ask that of him, and I really felt that pressure today. I thought to myself, 'What if we have to take him back home to his box, where there would be a plaque saying 'best horse in the world', and for his year to end in disappointment?' We were asking him to do something quite incredible after he had already proved he was the best, so I felt an enormous weight on my shoulders. I love taking on these big challenges, but this morning I was really wondering why we were putting ourselves through it - Francis Graffard, trainer."
2025-11-30 - Tokyo"Calandagan is a fantastic horse and we're lucky to have very nice horses this year who can compete at the top level, so I was able to give him a break before preparing him for this. He arrived in top form and is a real champion. Work is easy for him and I worked him with Daryz before Arc weekend because I needed to get him ready for today. He showed Daryz how it worked and to have a gallop with an Arc and Champion Stakes winner is unbelievable. We always know he will give his all. I was thinking of the Japan Cup for him next, but that's a tough race to win so we will see how he is and discuss it with the team - Francis Graffard, trainer. We went a nice gallop early on, but when Calandagan found his stride he was ready to go on the approach to the straight. I could feel Ombudsman coming to me but I was going much better than him. He's a very good horse - Mickael Barzalona, jockey, speaking to ITV Racing."
2025-10-18 - Ascot"What happened in the race came as a surprise. I was upset I didn't put [last year's winner] Goliath in the race today because everyone was expecting a lot of pace, but I have no regrets now seeing how the race was run. Aidan [O'Brien, trainer] and his team put a lot of work into the tactics and it's always interesting, but Calandagan is an easy ride and I'm glad he had time to come and catch the filly. Mickael [Barzalona, jockey] said the last 200 metres are long here and he knew he was going to catch her, but when she kicked for home she was impressive and I thought, 'Oh my God, I'm going to finish second by a neck again' - Francis Graffard, trainer. We know Calandagan's quality and today the ground was quicker and he's one of these top-class horses. I didn't expect Jan Brueghel to set the pace but once I saw Continuous beside him and Rebel's Romance boxed in, I was happy where I was because I knew either William [Buick] was going to make a gap or Oisin [Murphy] was going to have to go round. I was just waiting to see what happened and when I saw Oisin making the move, I just followed - Mickael Barzalona, jockey."
2025-07-26 - Ascot"Well, Calandagan is not ungenuine! The race went really well for him and I thought he was travelling much more into the rhythm of the race this time. Mickael said he still had to ask him to keep up sometimes during the race but then in the straight, when there is rhythm and he can follow the pace, he can really lengthen and quicken really strongly. I thought he was really impressive there. After Epsom my first conclusion was that he needed the run against that horse on that ground. I thought he'd come on a lot for that and he's getting experience, while his jockey knows him better now. I will obviously discuss it [the King George] with connections but it seems sensible to go to Ascot, a place where he has won before. I need to take him there at 100 per cent. I don't think ground is important to him but you could see there the way he really accelerated on that good going. He's won on very soft ground as well but I hope we get good ground and that I can get him in peak form for the end of July and go there with a real chance. In any case I'm pleased we decided to stay home with him this time. - Francis Graffard, trainer."
2025-06-29 - Saint-Cloud"The horse had a perfect run and got the ride we were thinking of. Going down the hill he found himself behind Ryan (Moore on the winner) and he gave him plenty of time to balance. Calandagan probably took the lead for a small moment and then when they started to climb again you could see that Ryan was finding more. He's a very talented horse and I'm sure he'll win a Group One as he always runs his race. There are no excuses and I think it was a good performance. Don't forget he ran in Dubai and he hasn't run in Europe until this race. I think he was ready, but the winner is a tough O'Brien horse who keeps finding more. He's in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. - Francis-Henri Graffard, trainer."
2025-06-06 - Epsom"Calandagan was slow out of the stalls and he takes so much time to get into his rhythm. Mickael [Brazalona] said during the race he was happy they weren't going faster because he needed to get going. I don't have any excuses. In the straight we were following the winner and he had the first kick. He came really fast at the end. It was a very good start of the season for him. The plan is to go to Epsom for the Coronation Cup with him, but we'll see how he comes back from Dubai. It's a very good run and Mickael will know him more for the future, too - Francis Graffard, trainer."
2025-04-05 - Meydan"I thought the race was over when Calandagan took the lead and to be fair I didn't see the winner coming. He ran a great race and well done to the winning connections. He was slow away and he [Stephane Pasquier] tried to put him in the race then he travelled nicely. He had his chance to win but the winner beat us on the line - Francis Graffard, trainer, speaking to ITV."
2024-10-19 - Ascot"It was a fantastic run, but the odds were right. The stride Calandagan showed in the straight was fantastic to watch. I shouted as we thought we were coming to get him, but he could only keep pushing a champion in City Of Troy. I'm very proud of the horse. We didn't have any Group 1 form before and there were lots of question marks, but the way he accelerated was fantastic. He can come back to Ascot in the Champion Stakes, but we'll discuss it. He gave a lot of heart on the track today - Francis Graffard, trainer."
2024-08-21 - York"Everything was easy. Calandagan can be a naughty boy sometimes, and we have to ask him gently. Today he wanted to do everything - when he's like this, he is a fantastic horse. I didn't do anything, I just asked him to do it by himself - Stephane Pasquier, jockey."

High-class performer who has a record of 6-8 overall and 2-3 at Group 1 level, adding to his 2024 St Leger win when knuckling down the better to beat Calandagan in this contest (good to soft) 12 months ago; combination of cheekpieces and setting an unsuitably steady pace perhaps contributed to his King George defeat behind that rival; reappearance success in the Ormonde at Chester (1m5f, good) sets him up nicely for another Coronation Cup bid.

High-class horse who knuckled down the better to beat Calandagan in this race last year
Stable Tour
"He could go back to the Coronation Cup again, having won it last season, and he'd have a run before it. Obviously the Coronation Cup has a different look to it this year, up a lot in prize-money, so we'll see how he gets on. 31-03-26"

"Jan Brueghal has a good record but he was off since the King George where things went wrong. It was nice to get him back today and that was a good performance - Ryan Moore, jockey, speaking to Sky Sports Racing.Ryan [Moore] was delighted with Jan Brueghal and obviously we'll plan to go to the Coolmore Coronation Cup on Derby Day - Kevin Buckley, Coolmore UK representative, speaking to Sky Sports Racing."
2026-05-07 - Chester"Jan Brueghel is very tough and Ryan [Moore] gave him a class ride, but you know he doesn't surrender. He'd improved a lot from the last day, and you could see he was pricking his ears at the finish. He ran a lovely race first time back when it was only a mile and a quarter and he got beat by a good horse of Joseph's [O'Brien]. It was a bit unfair to pitch him in early over a mile and a quarter, but we just needed to get him out. He's a very brave horse and if you pass him slowly, you're in trouble. Ryan gave him an incredible ride, balanced him and got him in a lovely rhythm, and you can see him starting to come from a long way out. Everyone knew before the race that it was going to be a good gallop, and Wayne [Lordan, on Continuous] was there to make sure it was a good gallop. All anyone wanted was for it to be a solidly run, evenly run race, and then we'd see. Then we'd know after the race what to do next, what distance to go for next time, what to not do. The worst thing is when you come out of a race and you say, 'But if they'd gone a good pace, then?' that's a problem for everybody. He's a very good tough horse who was unbeaten last year, and he'd still be unbeaten if I hadn't run him too early at The Curragh this year. - Aidan O'Brien, trainer.Jan Brueghel stays this trip very well and he's an uncomplicated horse. Aidan had him, as he always does, in unbelievable shape. He showed a great attitude. The second horse is a very talented horse and I am sure he'll win a big race soon. The ground, being just on the slower side of good, suited him and he stayed on really well - Ryan Moore, jockey."
2025-06-06 - Epsom"We knew the track would suit and the trip would suit. I think Jan Brueghel showed he's successful going that extra distance and I think he's a Gold Cup horse in the making. Don't be surprised if he steps up a bit next year, But he has a bit of class and he's done that really well - Sean Levey, rider."
2024-09-14 - Doncaster"Jan Brueghel was very green. I didn't really want to make the running because he was a bit raw. The horse in front stopped and I was kind of left there and he was waiting. It was a difficult track for him and he's carried a penalty too, so you'd have to be happy with what he's done. He'll get better still. There's definitely more class in there, you've just got to get it out of him - Ryan Moore, rider."
2024-08-01 - Goodwood"We were worried about the ground for Jan Brueghel. We knew he had improved a lot from the last day and that he'd stay further but we weren't sure about the ground. You could see him changing legs when he turned in. He will stay much further and will be very happy going a mile and a half. We were thinking of coming here and then on to Goodwood and then going to the Leger - Aidan O'Brien, trainer."
2024-06-29 - Curragh"Jan Brueghel just wasn't straightforward to train, he took a bit of time, he's a big horse. He's probably a fair horse - Aidan O'Brien, trainer."

Scored on soft ground on debut; flopped in the German race won by Bay City Roller but otherwise progressive and overcame trouble to defy a Group 2 penalty in Group 3 contest at Newbury (1m4f, good) on seasonal debut, taking record to 5-8; about 3l behind Lambourn at Chester last term but is now in the same ball park as that opponent on ratings, with a chance of further improvement to boot; adds great interest to this race.

Overcame trouble to win at Newbury on reappearance; progressive and adds great interest
Stable Tour
"He's really exciting as his homework is telling us he's improved again. He finished off the season in good form, bar his last start in Germany when it was one race too many. He wants just good ground and not fast, and he'll probably start off in the John Porter at Newbury or the Alleged at the Curragh. The Coronation Cup would definitely be a target. 31-03-26"
Quotes
"Convergent has been working well with nice horses and I think he's a Group 1 horse in the making. The Coronation Cup [on June 6] would be high on the list, but whether he handles Epsom we'll find out. He's a mile-and-a-half horse with a turn of foot, and at that level they're hard to come by. If we can keep him going the right way there's a Group 1 in him for sure - Karl Burke, trainer."
2026-04-18 - Newbury"Convergent has run a lovely race and is very much a work in progress. He's a horse for next season as well as this one. He's been running over shorter trips and was keen over the first couple of furlongs, then he got into a rhythm. Turning in I thought we'd win, before I thought we'd get run out of it, and then he's stayed on again. We know he stays a mile and a half well now and we're very happy for the future. I couldn't be happier without winning - Karl Burke, trainer."

Most wins on good ground but has form on soft; held on by only a neck from Bay City Roller on better terms in the Huxley (1m2f Group 2) at Chester on seasonal debut but proved game in first-time cheekpieces and, based on Ryan Moore's post-race comments, will come on for the run; notable contender in the retained headgear returned to the scene of his biggest moment, namely a clearcut success in last year's Derby (followed up in the Irish version).

"He had a brilliant three-year-old season, winning the Derby and Irish Derby. We're very happy with him and we're going to train him for the Coronation Cup. The plan is to have a run before it, potentially in the Mooresbridge [May 4, Curragh]. 31-03-26"
Quotes
"Lambourn won the Vase here last year and won two Derbies. He was trained for the Leger after but didn't stay that day. It was nice to bring him back here though hard bringing him back that far in distance. He was a little bit rusty but he kept finding and he'll improve from today and we can look forward to the rest of the year with him - Ryan Moore, jockey, speaking to Sky Sports Racing.Lambourn didn't make it easy for Ryan at stages and he hit the rail just round the bend. But Ryan always knew he had all bases covered. The concern was the drop in trip but he's been here before - and from the crowd and the atmosphere it was great to see a dual Derby winner here. Obviously he'll get stepped up in trip next time and is likely to be targeting the Coronation Cup, that would be the natural next step - Kevin Buckley, Coolmore UK representative."
2026-05-08 - Chester"Lambourn is a straightforward horse, we know his running style, he's behind the bit. He travelled sweetly today and we were in a lovely rhythm all the way down the back and I started to pick it up. Things were going well but Tom was always there breathing down my neck and I didn't feel like I went through the two pole as well as I'd like to. He just kind of stayed on so there's a question mark over whether he actually stayed the trip or not - Sean Levey, jockey."
2025-09-13 - Doncaster"They went very slow. Lambourn is a high-tempo, mile-and-a-half horse. Everything was perfect with him; we wanted to get a racecourse run or gallop in him before the Leger or the Arc. The race was kind of a mess really. It was a hack around to halfway, then a sprint up the stretch - Aidan O'Brien, trainer."
2025-08-20 - York"Lambourn is just so laid-back, I can't tell you. Ryan gave him a lovely, uncomplicated, straightforward ride. He knew him to a tee from winning on him at Chester and everything Wayne [Lordan] told him. He's so relaxed, and the horse coming with him [Sir Dinadan] was only going to help him, and you can see he was pricking his ears all the way up the straight. I knew Ryan would be very happy about that as he would have been delighted to have company and would love to get into a battle. He has that personality, that attitude, it's like everything in life when sports people have that attitude and he's that straightforward, genuine and just does whatever you want for you, whenever he can. He's like his dad, if you put him in first gear, he stays in first gear; if you put him in third gear, he'll stay in third gear. He's not influenced by anything around him, but always wants to please and never overdo himself. He could be a King George or an Arc type of horse. The way he races, I'd imagine he'd race that way regardless of the trip. You'd imagine he'd get further but he has lots of class - Aidan O'Brien, trainer."
2025-06-29 - Curragh"Australia [Lambourn's sire] is a great Derby winner, very genuine, and that's what Lambourn is - uncomplicated, genuine and committed. He always has been. His runs this year have been very good - he was second to Delacroix, and then was very impressive in Chester. Chester again - you have to be on your game and you have to stay, and that's the way he was. Ryan loved him in Chester and he obviously can't ride them all. He was always going to be an Irish Derby horse, a Leger horse, and Wayne said he definitely would stay further. He saves plenty for himself and he gives himself a chance to get any trip - Aidan O'Brien, trainer."
2025-06-07 - Epsom"Lambourn looked a thorough stayer and while he was a little on and off the bridle, once the penny dropped he came home really strongly. He got the trip really well and he's gone through the line nicely. We'll just have to see how they all get on in the trials but we were thinking of sending him to Epsom as they learn so much when they go to Chester - Aidan O'Brien, trainer."

Consistent colt whose Group 1 form is non-domestic, namely a success in Germany (1m4f, soft) last November and good second at the Curragh (10.5f, good) latest start; only a neck behind Lambourn on worse terms at Chester on reappearance, albeit with that rival rusty and likely to improve for the run, according to Ryan Moore; needs a personal best to land this prize.

Quotes
"That was maybe a career-best when you think of the penalty [5lb]. Bay City Roller was well-prepared and it was a strong race. You'd always prefer to win but I thought it was a very good run. He's fine over ten to 12 furlongs on ground with soft in the description, and they'll look for the weather for him - Oisin Murphy, jockey."
2026-05-08 - Chester"It all just came together perfectly today and Bay City Roller was able to show just how good he is. Fundamentally he stays very well and he loves to get his toe in. I think we've properly worked him out now. We know what's required of him next year and how to ride him and that will help us map out a season of Group 1s accordingly. He relishes some cut in the ground and there have been times when he's slightly missed the break. But today I felt he looked the best he's looked and that's credit to everyone at home for keeping him in such good form for the duration of the year. He has a really bright future and he's so well bred - George Scott, trainer."
2025-11-08 - Munich"Bay City Roller has run an absolute blinder. We came here thinking he'd run a big race and it's nice to see him do that - George Scott, trainer."
2025-09-07 - Longchamp"Bay City Roller was very well positioned by Callum [Shepherd] under the circumstances and ran with great credit, showing a very good attitude. On the day he was beaten by a better horse, one with a big reputation. But we're very happy with the way he's progressing. We feel there's a lot more to come from Bay City Roller if he gets a bit stronger and really starts to express himself at a mile and a quarter, maybe even a mile and a half one day - George Scott, trainer."
2025-06-29 - Saint-Cloud"Sadly John and Thady's horse came out the front and blasted the race apart slightly with the pace angle but Bay City Roller got some pace to aim at and travelled great, it was a very pleasing run. He's a really genuine horse. He's done everything he needed to today. Stiffer tests await him but it will be fascinating to see how he gets on. I quite like the Lagardere for him because he's very well balanced - George Scott, trainer."
2024-09-14 - Doncaster"It's never easy giving a penalty away, especially when you've got some strong connections in the race. I felt he needed some more game time under his belt before we stepped up into Pattern company and he got it. He had to get down and fight a very nice prospect, who's bred to go on the surface. He knows how to get down and dirty and that's going to stand him in great stead moving forward. Shaikh Nasser is obviously a major patron of the yard and has some nice two-year-olds. Bay City Roller has been working in among those, so he's seen the horse throughout the year. When he went to Sandown and won nicely, he inquired whether he might be for sale and it turned out he was. I don't want to run him with firm in the going description. His mum loved cut, he's got quite big feet and he'll be a different horse on soft ground. I'd say the Champagne is very much on his radar. From there, it will be a question of whether it's a sales race or a Group 1 - George Scott, trainer."

Runner-up in two Cup races last term; only a neck behind stablemate Jan Brueghel in the 2024 St Leger but was beaten about 5l by that opponent last month when bidding for a second success in the Ormonde at Chester, doing nothing to close their current ratings differential; perhaps in here to set the pace and ensure a proper test.

Quotes
"We thought Illinois would be a Gold Cup horse next year, and obviously it was the plan Kyprios would come here this year and he would step up next year. The plan was for him to go to the Coronation [Cup] and I was training him as a good mile and a half-horse, and then when Kyprios retired we switched him to this race. We have to be happy with the run and he had a lovely preparation the last day. Maybe if we knew he was coming here straightaway, we might have had him going earlier and maybe lighter. He might go to Goodwood and meet this horse again and I would imagine he will progress again then. He got tired at the two-furlong pole today, like a lot of horses do, and we will see if we can improve him another little bit for this distance. It shows how good Kyprios was as Trawlerman had been second to him a couple of times, I think - Aidan O'Brien, trainer."
2025-06-19 - Ascot"That was very pleasing, he's a lovely horse. Illinois is a big, fine, strong animal so he will improve for the run. Ryan was very happy with him. He was waiting for someone at the bend to take him there and they didn't so he just had to go. He was just playing around in front at the end there but he's a lovely horse. He's very versatile. We've just been talking to Aidan and you could drop him back in trip for the Coronation Cup or you could step him up to Cup races. He'd do whatever you want for you. You can see what he did last year, he's a proper horse. He's a two-time Group 2 winner and carried the penalty today and did it really well. He's a lovely horse to have, we're lucky - Paul Smith, representing the owners."
2025-05-08 - Chester"They are two very good horses and clearly there's nothing between them. Sean gave the winner a very good ride and neither stopped all the way down the straight. We knew the winner had improved a lot since Goodwood and he's a classy horse. Either of them could go to Melbourne, they're two classy stayers but Illinois would have no problem coming back to a mile and a half - Aidan O'Brien, trainer."
2024-09-14 - Doncaster"Illinois stays very well and looked like he was going to lose second, but fought back and that usually suggests that he wants that staying trip, as he showed at Ascot too - Aidan O'Brien, trainer."
2024-08-21 - York"We felt any of the three could win. Ryan made the decision to ride Illinois, and he had the choice of the King Edward VII Stakes or this race. He's obviously a St Leger-type horse and is going to improve from three to four. He's a bit of a baby mentally still, so he might have a little rest now and maybe go to York on the way to the Leger, something like that. I think he might have a little bit more class than a Cup horse. His sister won the Arc, so he's that type - Aidan O'Brien, trainer."
2024-06-19 - Ascot"Illinois ran a lovely race and just got a bit tired in the deep ground. He was working lovely, but he's a big horse and we didn't want to over-squeeze him for his first run because we felt the season was going to be long for him. We've often felt with those type of horses that if you over-squeeze them early in the season, it can catch you in the middle of the season so we just had him ready to run and he ran a lovely race. Ryan said he struggled in the ground and he will come forward a lot from it - Aidan O'Brien, trainer."
2024-04-07 - Leopardstown"Ryan was very happy with Illinois. He's still a baby and will improve plenty - Aidan O'Brien, trainer."
2023-10-22 - Saint-Cloud"Illinois is a beautiful colt. There's not too many that when you go down past the two and a half, they say point me. I actually got there too soon because I thought he'd take a bit of stoking. He has a lot going for him - pedigree, scope, size, action, wind. He was pretty much a steering job and I'm going to miss these Galileos - Seamie Heffernan, jockey."
