Frankel colt who was dominant in a maiden last July, a Group 2 at Leopardstown (1m) in September and Group 3 Chester Vase (12.5f, good) one month ago; his free-flowing, long-striding action was seen to good effect in those races, but not on heavy ground when third in the Group 1 Futurity at Doncaster (1m) in October; soft ground would also introduce something for him to prove but otherwise he brings strength of stamina and among the best form; if the ground is okay, a bold show looks assured.
Comment
Stays well, good form; something to prove on soft/heavy, otherwise bold show looks assured
Stable Tour
"He won twice last year, including a Group 2 at Leopardstown by five lengths, before finishing third in the Futurity Trophy on heavy ground. He went very well at the Curragh on Sunday and he could be a second-string in the Epsom Derby. He looks like an Epsom horse - he's a great mover and that course will probably suit him. He could go to the Leopardstown trial, to York or Lingfield. It depends on how he comes out of his work on Sunday. We were surprised by the way he went through the ground and he finished very strong. He's obviously a very classy horse. 31-03-26"
Quotes
"Benvenuto Cellini is obviously a high-class horse and carried a penalty there. We're just trying to learn about these horses. Proposition set a nice tempo. It wasn't ideal, but he showed really good pace to run them down and he'll come on for the run - Ryan Moore, jockey.Benvenuto Cellini was a classy juvenile and on better ground today with better ground, Ryan [Moore] was very happy with him. He'll certainly be going to the Derby, I'd imagine. He's always been a very high-class horse who's shown a lot at home. He's got a beautiful stride and a beautiful temperament, so he's always been up there as high-class. Ryan said he was very focused and professional and he'd have learnt a lot. He's definitely in the mix this year. He was originally going to Epsom for the Blue Riband before it was delayed by a week and Aidan [O'Brien, trainer] decided to bring him here instead. He thought it'd educate him and he'd learn a lot. Often things get shuffled or moved around at the last minute and it's a moving feast. He's ticked a box to go, for sure and this is a very good trial - Paul Smith, owners' representative."
2026-05-06 - Chester"Benvenuto Cellini ran a lovely race and Christophe [Soumillon, jockey] said he got stuck in the ground. He's a very good mover and Christophe would have looked after him the last half a furlong. It was still a very good run, he was only beaten a couple of lengths and he kept coming to the line - Aidan O'Brien, trainer"
2025-10-25 - Doncaster"He looks like he's going to be a lovely mid-distance horse. Benvenuto Cellini was always going to be a Derby Trial horse, Christophe (Soumillon) says he feels like a French Derby horse. He could go again this year, the Futurity or one of the French races, and start next year in a Derby Trial - Aidan O'Brien, trainer, speaking to Racing TV"
2025-09-13 - Leopardstown"Benvenuto Cellini is a horse that stepped forward and riding him around there in front he was having a good look. He got a little bit lonely in the last furlong and was half leaning off the rail, but he's a very nice colt. I think mentally he's going to improve, he's just a little bit immature. He's a nice colt for us as the year goes on. He feels like a horse who is going to stay well. He was only doing his own thing out front but when I got after him he quickened and he's going to stay, so that will bring a bit of class into him when he goes up in trip - Wayne Lordan, jockey, speaking to Racing TV."
2025-07-14 - Killarney"With that run under his belt. Benevenuto Cellini will be a very hot favourite in a maiden next time - Aidan O'Brien, trainer, speaking to Racing TV."

Well on top last September in a maiden at Kempton (7f, AW) and novice at Bath (1m, good to firm); non-runner in Group 1 Futurity due to heavy going; not the easiest to settle when reappearing in Group 2 Dante at York (10.2f, good; 11-2) last month but he mastered front-running Action in the last half furlong to win it well, putting Christmas Day in the shade as well; settling a bit better (fine as 2yo) would cement claims for 1m4f but this son of Frankel won going away and brings clear potential, plus leading form and an unbeaten record.
Comment
Settling a bit better would help but he won going away in Group 2 Dante at York (10.2f)
Quotes
"That was brilliant. We just really didn't know [coming into today]. We were hopeful as Item has done some great bits of work. Andrew has really liked him, and we went into the winter dreaming. The dream continues. It would be amazing to have a Derby runner. It's what we all do it for. Andrew has said very publicly he would love to win the Derby - Anna Lisa Balding, wife of winning trainer Andrew Balding.I thought we were going along nice and evenly. Item was still a little bit in my hands, but it was his first run of the season and he was entitled to be a bit fresh as he has been off the track for a while. As the race went on, he relaxed and got into a nice rhythm. I was pretty happy after that. I thought he got to Wayne [Lordan, rider of runner-up Action] well. I thought that he was going to go away but he just seemed to prick his ears and just ran around a small bit. But it was only his third start, so he is entitled to do that. I don't think you really know how they'll handle Epsom until you go there but he jumps, he travels and is a well-balanced horse, so hopefully he'll be fine - Colin Keane, jockey."
2026-05-14 - York"It's a difficult track, but the key today was to bring Item here and educate him regardless of where he finished. He showed a lot of ability and has a big engine. He's learnt as much before and after as he did in the race, because he probably finds galloping the easiest part. It's hard to know exactly what level he's run to, but the feel he gave me and the way he took it all in is exciting for connections. Doncaster [for the Futurity] will really suit him and he certainly won't be the worst horse in the race. He found the line well today without me getting too serious on him. With his big, beautiful stride I don't think softer ground will be an issue - Rob Hornby, talking to Sky Sports Racing."

Second start as 2yo was a 6l win in Curragh maiden (1m, heavy); never able to challenge on return in the Group 3 Ballysax won by Christmas Day and couldn't have left it any later in the Derby Trial back over Leopardstown's 1m2f (good) four weeks ago, but upstaging Pierre Bonnard so dramatically in the latter reinforces the feeling that 1m4f will suit him well; his sire's sole Group 1 win was at this trip; each-way player for trainer and jockey who won the Oaks yesterday.
Comment
Swooped on Pierre Bonnard in the 1m2f Leopardstown Derby Trial and 1m4f will suit him well
Stable Tour
"He's smart and a very good work horse. He had a good run in a tricky race in the Ballysax Stakes and will have learned a lot from that. We've always had him in mind as a middle-distance or staying horse and he looked like that at Leopardstown. 22-04-26"
Quotes
"We were a bit worried about the fast ground because James J Braddock's maiden win last year was on soft. You'd have to say that he handled it well. Before today we were thinking that he might be a horse for the King Edward in Ascot. That's the race we were working towards, but I suppose we now have to consider other options as well. This is going to be a horse that will hopefully turn up in top international races through the course of his career. Today was obviously a big step forward. We've always thought he'd love going 1m4f - Joseph O'Brien, trainer"

Asserted late on to finish firmly on top last October in a Group 3 at Newmarket (good to firm) and Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud (very soft) and they were over 1m2f; 3yo campaign got off to a muted start but he briefly hit the front in Derby Trial at Leopardstown before James J Braddock swooped and Aidan O'Brien has stressed that he went gently with him at home until after that race; his sire and dam's sire were Derby winners (dam won 1m2f Group 1 Nassau) and he now moves up from 1m2f; he looked every inch a serious Derby contender last term and that's probably still the impression to go with.
Comment
Looked every inch a serious Derby contender as 2yo and that impression still holds sway
Stable Tour
"He's a big, classy colt who won his last three races last year, including the Zetland at Newmarket and a Group 1 at Saint-Cloud. Christophe rode him for those two wins and was always super-impressed with him. He's being trained for Epsom and might have the two Irish trials [Ballysax and Derby Trial, both at Leopardstown] before it. He's very straightforward, very relaxed and very chilled, so you'd imagine he'd get a mile and a half well. Ryan rode him at the Curragh and thinks he's a horse who is going to get a mile and a half well. 31-03-26"
Quotes
"Ryan said he would have preferred to be handier, Pierre Bonnard had two blows. They're all having a blow. He'll leave the run well behind him next time, he wants 1m4f and will definite comeback here for the Derby Trial."
2026-04-12 - Leopardstown"Obviously Pierre Bonnard is a Derby horse. We'll start him in a Derby trial and all he should do is get better. We weren't sure [about the soft ground] and that's why it was good to come and see if he would handle the slower ground. They do a beautiful job here with the ground and it was lovely to get another run into him. He's a beautiful horse with a long stride and a beautiful mind, and he stays very well, so he's very exciting for next year - Aidan O'Brien, trainer. This is just mad, to win two Group 1s on the same day under hands and heels rides. On the turn I was very aware I didn't want to get caught for a turn of foot because Pierre Bonnard is a horse who can sustain his finishing effort but is still a little bit immature. Fortunately we went a decent gallop and he was very comfortable with the rhythm. He takes a little bit of time to get going so I was keen to launch my challenge early. But the way he finished, what joy! - Christophe Soumillon, jockey."
2025-10-26 - Saint-Cloud"Christophe [Soumillon] seemed very happy with Pierre Bonnard. He is a lovely big horse and still a big baby at home. He does everything very easy. He is a lovely, big straightforward horse and is going to improve a lot over the winter. It was a lovely win last time Dundalk when Wayne (Lordan) rode him. I think at the moment he looks like a Derby trial horse for next year. Endorsement ran a lovely race too, it was very solid - Aidan O'Brien, trainer."

Debut was on soft; all four of his races were tight finishes and he won the last three; pulled it out of the fire against useful rivals in a valuable novice event at Newbury (1m2f, good) and narrowly maintained an advantage over Bay Of Brilliance as the pair drew clear in a ding-dong battle for the Lingfield Derby Trial (11.6f, good to firm) four weeks ago; his pedigree is all about 1m4f, including with his sire and dam's sire both Derby winners, and he also shapes as if every yard today will suit; needs to pull out more again but has to be in each-way calculations.
Comment
Won his last three; pedigree and performance are all about 1m4f; firmly in the e-w picture

"I haven't really seen the race. I was at the stalls, and then I only saw them head on. I heard Maltese Cross have his name mentioned, so I know he was going to be close at least. It's great to win. We were a little underwhelmed at Newbury, he didn't really look perfect but today was better. They drew clear of the third too, which is a good sign. He likes a battle. If he's fit and well, he'll go to Epsom - William Haggas, trainer.Maltese Cross was an extremely exciting horse for us over the winter and we expected a lot from him at Newbury, but it actually left a few questions to be answered as he didn't win by far. He impressed me today. He didn't win by far but he's showing more of his racing style. He had to roll his sleeves up and is extremely exciting. He'll relish the Derby trip and the track won't be a problem. He's every bit ready to go for Epsom - Tom Marquand, jockey, speaking to ITV Racing."
2026-05-09 - Lingfield"I liked the way he stayed on up the hill. Maltese Cross wants a mile and a half really but I'm never too keen to run them too far at two. We'll probably leave him now as he's a nice horse for next year. I think he'll learn a lot from that and he liked the ground, so we'll aim him at a race in the spring and see where we are. We think he's a nice prospect - William Haggas, trainer."

Maiden success was on heavy going; Group 3 Ballysax at Leopardstown (1m2f, good to yielding) on April reappearance made it three wins in a row and his Dante third at York (10.2f, good) next time was at least as good on form; while lacking anything like the same dash as winner Item at York, and also unable to get to grips with stablemate Action, he did plug on as if 1m4f could help; it clearly needs to.

"A nice colt who did well last year for an immature type. He's done well over the winter and could go to Chester or Lingfield for a Derby trial. He'll stay very well and I'm pleased with him. 27-04-26"
Quotes
"It was a really good effort. Bay Of Brilliance is great to deal with and we'll decide at the five-day stage, I suppose. I think we'll see how it pans out over the next couple of weeks and how it's shaking out. I'd love to have a go. He's a cool customer and he's going to handle the whole jamboree. He's going to stay too. Based on that, he's also going to handle the track, so that's three good reasons to run. He's just a really straightforward individual and we know he's a lovely horse, which is part of the battle - Ralph Beckett, trainer."
2026-05-09 - Lingfield"It was a very different race to Goodwood. We were coming back a furlong so I wanted to make sure we went a proper gallop. Bay Of Brilliance stays very well and loves this ground. I was impressed, he saw them off early and powered away. He was very dominant with a penalty, which is a hard thing to do. Hopefully he'll be a nice stayer for next season. He's very mature and gets on with the job, I couldn't fault that - Hector Crouch, jockey."

Closely related to 2025 Derby winner Lambourn; carries his head high but ended last season with a close, battling second in the Group 1 Futurity at Doncaster (1m, heavy) and front-running second in the Dante at York (10.2f, good) last month was of a similar order, albeit no match for Item in the final 1f; a disappointing, sluggish display on reappearance was his only start with tongue tied; likely to stay 1m4f, with a possible place role but it's unlikely to be more unless the new cheekpieces have a major positive effect.

Frankel colt bought for 1,100,000gns as a yearling; all four races on good to firm; Beverley and Goodwood novice wins last summer before the Group 2 Royal Lodge saw a comprehensive end to his unbeaten record; he returned to Newmarket, however, with an ultimately authoritative win in a five-runner Listed race (1m2f) five weeks ago, helping to make the running; 1m4f beckons strongly after that and he's included in each-way calculations.

Quotes
"We were thinking about Chester or Lingfield for Ancient Egypt, but when I saw this race was cutting up I thought we'd have a go. He disappointed here in the Royal Lodge last year, but he's grown up a lot over the winter and David Egan and Rowan have ridden him at home this year and said to go a mile and a half, which is why we made the running over this shorter trip. I would say all roads lead to Epsom after that and he handled the Dip well here which is encouraging - Charlie Johnston, trainer. It's the first time I've seen Ancient Egypt and Charlie [Johnston, trainer] thought maybe a mile and a quarter was on the short side but he was very determined and finished the race strongly. He ticked all the boxes today and he's done nothing wrong but I'll leave that to Charlie and Kia [Joorabchian, owner] to see if there's a race for him before Epsom - Frankie Dettori, owners' global brand ambassador.Ancient Egypt isn't quite the finished article yet, he's still a bit of a baby but he's a horse who is going to mature with time. He looks like he'll get further so he'll have plenty of options - Rowan Scott, jockey."
2026-05-01 - Newmarket"I get nervous before a race when nothing but winning will do and we would have been disappointed with second. Ancient Egypt was a bit coltish beforehand and it took a while for the penny to drop, but he won it comfortably enough. He doesn't win gallops at home by much, but always sticks his neck out - Mark Johnston, trainer's assistant."

Strong late on to grab a maiden at Kempton (1m, AW) in November and came from last to second in the six-runner Listed Trial here (1m2f, good; 33-1) in April; hopes for the latter form seem to have been punctured and although he looks capable of better and shapes as if 1m4f will suit him well, 1m4f in something other than the Derby would seem much more realistic.

Travelled well and challenged from the rear at Newbury (1m3f, good; 17-2) on reappearance seven weeks ago, sticking to his task manfully too while chasing home an exciting prospect at a respectful distance; a promising, scopey sort from a famous middle-distance family but his progressive form in maidens, without a win, does not make him a serious Derby contender.
